Floriography 101: I can’t help falling in love with...flowers

“Can we speak in flowers? It will be easier for me to understand.”

  • Nayyirah Waheed

The meanings behind flowers has always been buried deep in history, with their significance being recognised as far back as ancient Greece. They have always had their own language and have been used for centuries to deliver secret communications. Today, floriography has added its own modern twist to the various meanings keeping flowers at the forefront of spiritual communication, while always giving respect to times past.

We’re taking a romantic turn on our journey through floriography with the theme of falling in love.

The idea of giving flowers romantically is often reserved for Februarys’ famous heart-shaped holiday, but flowers and romance go hand in hand all year round. And this year, we could all do with a little more love don’t you think?

Flowers are the best way to express love in all shapes and sizes, and here’s how to do it using the language of flowers.

Let them know with Lilacs

According to Greek Mythology, a nymph named Syringa was pursued by Pan, the god of the forests and fields who was eager to show his affections. However, she was startled by his affections and hid herself by transforming into a bush, which is now known as the lilac. Today, the lilac is given to symbolise the first sparks of a relationship and to show the signs of blooming love. They are a popular gift for anniversaries, as they also represent your very first love.

Indulge in some self-love with Narcissus’

There is something so empowering about self-acceptance and taking the time to love yourself. The Narcissus flower is said to be named after the Ancient Greek figure Narcissus, who was so handsome he fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water and was unable to look away from it. When he eventually passed away, small delicate flowers grew where he lay, known as the Narcissus flower. While we don’t suggest going as far as Narcissus, treating yourself to a bouquet is the perfect gesture of self-love.

Treat your true love to Tulips

While red roses are a classic symbol of romance, red tulips symbolise true, everlasting love. They are the perfect flower to show you are madly in love and don’t care who knows it! The meaning is said to come from a famous story about a woman who had to choose between 3 valiant knights who wished to marry her. She asked the goddess of flowers to help her decide by turning her into a flower – that flower was a red tulip. The tulip is the national flower of the Netherlands but is loved worldwide. In the 16th Century, Tulips in the Netherlands cost more than a house! Luckily our prices are much more reasonable.

Spread the love with Alchemilla Mollis (Lady's Mantle)

Lady’s mantle is said to symbolise platonic love, making it a great gift for friends and family. The spreading root leaves represent the connection you feel to your loved ones, near and far. It shows a comforting love, so If you want to let someone know you are there or show you’re thinking of them, this flower is perfect. In the middle ages, it was said to represent the Virgin Mary and has always had links to femininity and womanhood.

Get creative with carnations.

The carnation has such a variety of meanings in floriography. Depending on the colour, they all say different things. A dark red carnation represents a deep love and affection for someone, whereas a light red carnation is linked with admiration. White is for those who have lost their love or have a new love in their sights. And pink is famously linked with Mother’s day, symbolising a Mothers undying love. It is said the carnations grew where the Virgin Mary’s tears fell, as she watched Jesus on the cross.

You don’t just have to stick to one type of flower. At Floriade, we will help you put together the perfect bouquet full of your loved one's favourite flowers, as well as the flowers that show the emotion you want to express.

September 21, 2020

Flowers have been used for centuries as a way of showing how we feel. In this post, we’ll be focusing on gratitude. Gratitude is such a positive emotion, but it can sometimes be overlooked. You can be grateful to others for a whole range of different things, or even grateful to yourself for having a great week (self-care is very important!). It’s fair to say that 2020 really hasn’t panned out how we expected. But we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you, our customers and friends, for being so supportive during these unusual times. We are so grateful for your continued loyalty and we are so thankful to be sharing our passion with you again.
